More than 600 Australian Air League cadets marched with precision - some with musical instrument in hand - played ball games and showed off their aviation knowledge under perfect skies.

The review to mark the 80th anniversary of the youth group finished with cadets being reviewed by Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove.

The vice-regal office holder was the only individual without a jacket in a shade of blue.

Sir Peter said the cadets were developing valuable knowledge and values.

"The skills you're developing: leadership, navigation, radio, radar, meteorology, electronics and semaphore are going to serve you well in whatever career path you choose in the future," he said.

"For 80 years, the league has instilled important ideals in young Australians; the importance of teamwork, ingenuity and resourcefulness, and above all being an engaged, giving and selfless citizen."

The cadets from Queensland, NSW, Victoria and South Australia had prepared all year to find out which squadrons were most distinguished.

Air League spokesman Brian Grinter said the volunteer-run organisation gave children aged 8 to 18 a range of experiences.

"[There are] education classes, what planes are and how they work, up to the sort of theory you'd need for your private pilot's licence," Mr Grinter said.

"Children have the opportunity to go for joy flights."

The air league has a squadron in Canberra, with cadets meeting each week at the Canberra Aero Club at Canberra Airport.
