The NSW Rural Fire Service firefighter was responding to a fire that started 8km south of Gunning, on Gundaroo Road on Monday afternoon.
The fire burnt through just over 70 hectares before it was contained by firefighters roughly 5.20pm.
The firefighter’s tanker was overcome by fire, and he was burnt, suffering burns to his face and hands.
He was expected to be airlifted to Concord Hospital in Sydney by the Snowy Hydro SouthCare Helicopter this afternoon.
An RFS spokeswoman said 70 firefighters remained at the scene about 6pm, but air support had been stood down.
Access to roads in the area has been cut off.
