"HUN PRISONERS LIVE IN LUXURY. WHILST AUSTRALIANS FIGHT IN GALLIPOLI.
"It must be a pleasant thing to be a German prisoner of war in these days. A large number of enemy subjects recently arrived in Sydney as prisoners of war on a certain well-known liner now used as a transport. The printed menu at dinner provided for these Huns has come into our possession. It reads as follows:
"Dinner: Green Turtle Soup. Boiled Schnapper and Hollandaise Sauce. Roast Leg of Pork and Apple Sauce. Braised Haunch of Mutton and Red Currant Jelly. Boiled Turkey and Celery Sauce. Singapore Curry and Rice. Roast and Boiled Potatoes. Plum Pudding and Sauce. Swiss Cream. Genoese Pastry. Cheese. Dessert. Coffee."
"A programme of music was provided by the German band (the bandmaster being Herr Eric Czech).
"We know of another menu at Anzac, the principal items being bully beef, and another kind of music [whistles of bullets] not quite so tuneful as Herr Czech's band.
"We are willing to treat these Huns with decency. But we emphatically protest against pampering like this. If there is any surplus of turtles and turkey on the transports let them be given to the men who are proceeding to the front or are returning therefrom to Australia."
