A private member's bill that would have cleared the way for the ACT to legislate on euthanasia has been narrowly voted down.

The bill, introduced by Liberal Democrat senator David Leyonhjelm, was defeated by 36 to 34 votes in the Senate on Wednesday night.

The bill proposed to overturn a federal law that removed the rights of the ACT and Northern Territory to legislate on euthanasia.

A trip to a GP or specialist can hurt the wallet anywhere in Australia. In Canberra though, residents are the most likely in the country to be slugged with out-of-pocket fees for Medicare services.

An Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report released on Thursday revealed the influence a patient's postcode has on their health care costs.

It found that in 2016–17, half of patients nationally paid something from their own pockets toward their non-hospital Medicare services.

Just when it looked like Katy Gallagher had a free run at her old Senate spot, things have changed again in a fast-evolving preselection race that is gripping ACT Labor.

Its factions are facing off against each other in three preselection contests, after the right faction of the party backflipped on a decision to let Ms Gallagher seek party nomination unchallenged.

Contests in the two other lower house Canberra seats involve at least four candidates in each.

The ACT Greens have admitted to "serious errors" in how the party handled a party volunteer's allegation that another volunteer sexually assaulted her in a taxi on the night of the 2016 federal election.

The branch has also distanced itself from comments made by party elder Bob Brown, who criticised the victim for not going to the police soon enough.

The admission follows the party bungling the handling of the allegation, including a former party convener attempting to water down an internal report of an investigation into the allegations.
