The decision follows disagreements with Canberra International Golf Centre principal Peter Kohlsdorf who leases the course from property developer Sotiria Liangis.

Mr Kohlsdorf says it is business as usual and he will be making announcements in the future that will "enhance things" at the course.

Capital Golf Club vice-president Ian O'Donnell said in his opinion Mr Kohlsdorf's introduction of a new management system which golfers did not agree with, saying they had no consultation, had been part of a well orchestrated plan.

When Vikings Club bought the course years ago about 740 members played on the greens which many rated as among the best in Canberra.

Numbers have been declining since then. About 200 golfers remain. Mr O'Donnell said some would leave, while others would remain at the course and play under a different regime.

"A majority of the committee have walked away or are going to other clubs. That's not out of spite, more a feeling of betrayal, I suppose," Mr O'Donnell said.

He said the club's modest assets would be passed on to the ACT Monaro District Golf Association and Central Southern Golf Association, which were due to merge soon, and money used for new and emerging junior golfers.

A public golf course was established at the Narrabundah site near Hindmarsh Drive about 1972, and a group of golfers established a club on the land owned by Sydney solicitors. A rough playing area at the time, it was named the goat track.

As golf members declined and residential prices in the inner south increased the land has become a target for redevelopment. Portions on the western end were sold for apartments.

Vikings, who bought the course from its original owners, upgraded the course, re-seeded fairways, but was advised in 2010 the ACT Government would not allow rezoning.

The club was sold to Mrs Liangis, who had previously attempted to buy it. Mr Kohlsdorf has a five-year lease, with an option to extend for another five years.
