One person has died, two people were trapped and four others injured in a three-car crash on the New England Highway on the NSW/Queensland border.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Community Safety said the crash occured just before midday in Wallangarra close to the Queensland-NSW border and has closed the highway in both directions.

A man died instantly in the accident and two people were trapped for at least an hour and were taken to Tenterfield Hospital with critical injuries.

The DCS spokeswoman said two rescue helicopters were called to the scene but she was unsure if they arrived in time to transport the two freed people.
