Gen Y and Millennial managers: serving the nation requires more truth, less praise

A youngish senior executive public servant asked me recently why I often criticised the public service in these columns. That totally surprised me. I have always maintained that Australia's public services – the APS and in most other jurisdictions (barring a couple of local councils in the news lately) – perform well. They deliver effective regulation, essential services, policy advice and a multitude of other public goods every day of the year. I replied to that effect.
