How does one describe Tony Ayers, the public servant? Paddy Gourley always referred to him as "AM", the "ancient mandarin". His contemporaries called him "the doyen of the service". He certainly epitomised the "frank and fearless" adviser. And for so many of us he carried the torch, publicly defending the public service in the face of its detractors.
