Hollywood stars shine Down Under

18 Nov, 2008 01:00 AM
Australia is ablaze with Hollywood star power thanks to three big movie premieres in the space of a few days.

Leading the charge, today's keenly awaited world premiere of Australia in Sydney lured star Hugh Jackman, director Baz Luhrmann and the rest of the cast to town yesterday, while Nicole Kidman flew in from the United States last night.

Daniel Craig and Olga Kurylenko have lingered after Saturday's premiere of the latest Bond movie, The Quantum of Solace, while former Bond star Sir Roger Moore is here to launch his autobiography.

Animated flick Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa premiered last night in Sydney, where stars Ben Stiller and Chris Rock walked the red carpet.

And US comedian Rob Schneider has just left Australia after promoting his new comedy film Big Stan, as have High School Musical 3 stars Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale, who whipped teens into a frenzy in Sydney and Melbourne.

Stiller, who plays Alex the lion in Madagascar, said he would love to see the animals in the Australian outback next time round.

''You guys have iconic animals: there aren't many countries that have animals that are so associated with the country. My daughter loves Australian wildlife,'' he said.

No matter where the animals go, their voiceovers are recorded in a Hollywood studio, but Stiller said he would love to shoot a movie in Australia some day.

''I've only really been to Sydney and up to this island near Cairns, but I'd love to get into the outback and see some of the country,'' he said. ''Maybe I'll get hired for Australia 2 and I can replace Hugh Jackman.''

Dreamworks boss Jeffrey Katzenberg, now here promoting Madagascar as well as a new 3D animation, Monsters vs Aliens due for release next year said it was an exciting time to be in the country.

''Right now, these past 24 hours, it feels like Hollywood has moved here,'' Katzenberg said yesterday.

''Literally yesterday I spent time with Baz Luhrmann; we hung out with Daniel Craig last night; I had breakfast with Hugh Jackman this morning.

''I mean there's more Hollywood here than there is in Hollywood, so it's pretty exciting.'' AAP
