Mother arrested as toddler found dead

22 Mar, 2010 11:44 AM
A mother has been arrested after the body of her two-year-old daughter was found in a house in Sydney’s inner west.

Police were called to the house on Benham Street at Dulwich Hill about 9.30pm yesterday, and found the toddler’s body inside.

It is not yet known how she died.

Neighbour Connie Ferrera said she would often see children playing outside the family's home.

"They seem like a big family, always lots of cars," she said.

"But there's never any problem. It's a big, quiet street. It’s just so sad."

Family and friends are at the house this morning.

Police would not confirm a report that the child died in a bath-tub.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out today, police said.

The girl’s mother, 28, was taken to Newtown police station, where she is being questioned.
