Local police received a report that two men tried to drag the girl into a white van with pink stripes on Sloane St at about 8.40am yesterday.

The girl managed to escape from the men and ran 500m to a local school raising the alarm.

Policed searched the area after the report, stopping several vehicles, but were unable to find a van fitting the description.

Police stressed there have been no other reports of missing children in the Goulburn area.

Goulburn crime manager, Inspector Ward Hanson said police were stepping up their investigation.

''This investigation is ongoing. The child is currently being interviewed by officers attached to Goulburn Local Area Command,'' Inspector Hanson said.

''In the meantime, we are reinforcing the 'safe people, safe places' message and in this particular instance this child has done the right thing by reporting it to the school.''

He said children should seek help at a police station, school or shop if they feel in danger and not get into a car with a person they do not know under any circumstance.

Inspector Hanson said schools in the area will be reminded of the importance of student safety in the wake of the incident.

''As part of the whole-government approach to safety of children in schools, we will be reinforcing the message by way of school liaison officers and education programs.''
