$1m facelift returns arboretum to its roots

05 Sep, 2009 12:02 PM
One of Canberra's oldest arboretums is about to receive a facelift, more than three years after the National Capital Authority pledged $1 million to the site.

The Lindsay Pryor Arboretum, off Barrenjoey Drive, was named in 2001 to commemorate Professor Lindsay Pryor, the internationally respected forest scientist, botanist and landscape architect.

But the arboretum, more than 50 years in the making, has since been left to run wild, even as the new international arboretum is being planted on the other side of Parkes Way.

In keeping with a package of initiatives announced in 2006 for the arboretum, NCA chief executive Gary Rake kick-started a renewal project for the site yesterday.

He has formed a steering committee made up of Dr John Gray, a retired forester who was once Canberra's chief landscape architect; Professors Ken Taylor and Peter Kanowski from the Australian National University; and Michael Bryce, husband of the Governor-General.
