5 teens accused of wild joy ride

20 Mar, 2010 10:06 AM
Five teenage girls from Canberra are accused of leading police on a high-speed cross-border chase in a stolen car culminating in a patrol car being rammed.

The girls, aged 13, 14, 15, and 16, were arrested in Canberra's south yesterday morning after allegedly leading officers on a chase through southern suburbs, at one point allegedly hurling a glass bottle at one of the pursuing police cars and then reversing into a patrol car in a bid to escape capture.

Police said the chase was only stopped when patrol cars surrounded the vehicle in Cooleman Court, Weston Creek.

Canberra police said they were contacted by their Queanbeyan counterparts at 1.45am and told that a white Nissan Pulsar, allegedly stolen in Watson the night before, was being pursued towards the capital.

Investigators said Tuggeranong officers picked up the chase shortly after and pursued the vehicle through Tuggeranong and Woden until it reached Cooleman Court.

The vehicle is reported to have reached speeds of 150km/h along a main arterial road in the Tuggeranong area.

Three juveniles, aged 13, 14 and 16 were charged with riding in a motor vehicle without consent and released on police bail.

Police believe the five teenagers were involved in the theft of a handbag in East Row, Civic, about 12.20am.

The 13-year-old, 14-year-old and 16-year old, all from Canberra's south, were charged with ride/drive motor vehicle without consent and were given watch-house bail to appear in the ACT Children's Court at a later date.

The 15-year-old from Canberra's south, who allegedly threw a bottle at police, appeared in the Children's Court charged with stealing the car, stealing a mobile phone and using an offensive weapon.

Her lawyer told Magistrate Karen Fryar that she had no instructions to apply for bail.

An application was made to the magistrate for the girl to undergo a mental health report.

Ms Fryar agreed to have the girl undergo mental health assessment in the Bimberi Youth Justice Centre and she will appear in court again on April 1.

The alleged driver of the car, a 16-year-old girl also from Canberra's south, was charged with stealing the vehicle, furious driving, unlicensed driving, failure to obey police directions and possession of cannabis.

The court was told the girl had been living out of home for the past two weeks and neither of her parents knew of her whereabouts.

She did not apply for bail and will appear in court on April 1.
