Abbott tells Libs to lay off independents

10 Sep, 2010 09:08 AM
Tony Abbott has told his MPs to stop attacking the two independents who helped Labor form minority government, saying the Coalition might need them on occasion on the floor of the Parliament and possibly to form government should the Labor arrangement collapse.

In his first address to the Liberal party room since the election, Mr Abbott told his charges he understood their frustration at the rural independents Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor for siding with Labor but said the men should not be blamed.

''They were put in a difficult position,'' one MP quoted Mr Abbott as saying. ''We might need them one day.''

Since Tuesday, when the duo sided with Labor, giving it a 76-74 majority, Coalition MPs and senators have lined up to attack the government as illegitimate and in several instances, attack Mr Oakeshott and Mr Windsor for supposedly betraying their conservative roots.

As Mr Abbott told his troops yesterday of the need for discipline and to keep the pressure on the government, Julia Gillard used her first post-election address to caucus to announce a very different style of government to the media-cycle-driven model under Kevin Rudd.

In a long address to colleagues, the Prime Minister said the government would play a long game and ''not be worried about each day's six o'clock news''. She promised an inclusive and consultative style and urged MPs and senators to air their grievances openly and frankly within caucus, rather than leak them to the media. Labor must learn to promote its achievements this term of office and ''build on the future, not dwell on the past''.

The South Australian MP Nick Champion, who was aggrieved at the dumping of Mr Rudd, said it was important that MPs and ministers felt free to constructively criticise the Prime Minister to prevent a repeat of the rancour that built up against Mr Rudd and led to his ousting. Mr Champion said what happened to Mr Rudd should never be repeated and ministers should be loyal to the person who appointed them.

Ms Gillard, who hosted a cavalcade of ministers through her office yesterday, is set to announce her new ministry as early as this weekend and is waiting to hear from Mr Oakeshott, who has been offered a cabinet post of minister for regional Australia. Mr Rudd is almost definitely to be made foreign affairs minister.

Ms Gillard also flagged a wholesale review of Labor's first term, including its disastrous election campaign. The review will allow MPs to air their grievances in a controlled manner, rather than in the newspapers. A source said a former premier, possibly Victoria's Steve Bracks, would conduct the review but nothing has been decided.

Mr Abbott, too, will reshuffle his frontbench next week and is under growing pressure to make significant changes.

Finding a spot for Malcolm Turnbull is Mr Abbott's most difficult task and the former leader was tipped yesterday to be given either communications or defence. The communications spokesman, Tony Smith, is expected to be shifted after the Coalition's poor performance on broadband during the election.

I think this story highlights one of the parliamentary reforms that the Coalition members really do need to make happen. Cease the bully tactics and the standover. Soon their power will be gone from the Senate, and if they do not pack away the bullies, they may lose sight of ever reaching power again.

What is stunning is that they have to have this pointed out to them... I dispair of their ability to dig themselves out of the old adversarial/attack paradigm that all the rest of us are utterly sick of.

From kinder polity last week to nasty polity two days ago, and now back to kinder polity today, it appears that Tony Abbott has once again switched from 'Ubermensch' to 'Untermensch' in his almost maniac attempts to gain power at any cost. What I'd like to know is when Abbott will start muzzling his 'attack-terriers' Heffernan and Abetz, and when the Liberal Party will finally give the deputy leadership to someone other than Julie 'death stare' Bishop, who has become so rusted on to this position, that she may as well be the permanent consolation prize for any future Liberal leadership pretenders. Also, as Team Abbott appears to have gained complete ownership of the name 'Coalition', Team Gillard should consider calling themselves 'The Alliance' to give them some credibility as a political bloc.

They're slow learners those Liberals - fancy needing to be told to lay off the independents in case their votes were needed one day. So much for a kinder softer polity when their first instinct is attack.

can we also get rid of the 2 hours of free radio for the coalition each day between 9.00 and 12.00 on the AM station. Listeningb to them you would think that the world as we know it is coming to an end because of the election result

don't worry at the next election the voters of the independents electorates will not be fooled again and the sitting independents will have someone else sitting in their seats
