A 35-year-old Chisholm man remained in a serious condition in Canberra Hospital late yesterday after an early-morning accident at Wanniassa.
Police said the man was travelling along Erindale Drive towards Tuggeranong when his white sedan left the road, crashing into two light poles.
Emergency Services had to cut the roof off the car to gain access to the man.
An off-duty police officer was the first person on the scene, calling in the fire brigade and paramedics at about 4am.
Police are investigating the incident and have called for any witnesses to come forward.
It is the second major crash in Canberra during the Easter holiday period after the death of 25-year-old Nathan Thomas, of Phillip.
Police said Mr Thomas's Nissan Pulsar left the road about 4km from the Uriarra Crossing on Friday morning.
The car hit a culvert and careered into several trees before crashing through a barbed wire fence before coming to rest on its roof.
The death was the fifth on ACT roads this year. Across the border, Queanbeyan Police have reported a fairly safe weekend on the roads. The only major incident was on a NSW section of the Federal Highway at 5pm on Saturday. The driver of the car was taken to Queanbeyan Hospital with minor injuries.
Acting Inspector Nick Hallett said Queanbeyan drivers appeared to be heeding the pre-Easter road safety messages. ''I think they are ... it's obvious people are trying to do the right thing,'' Inspector Hallett said.
Six people had been booked over four days for low and mid-range blood-alcohol readings.
Inspector Hallett said despite the drink-driving charges, he believed a heavy police presence on the roads had proved a deterrent for others.
