ACT fares better in ABC drama

02 Dec, 2008 09:23 AM
ACT parents will be better off than those in NSW, Queensland and Victoria following the probable demise of several Canberra ABC Learning Centres.

In total, 386 centres across Australia have been listed as ''subject to further operational review,'' of which only three are situated in the ACT.

In the current situation, centres in Aranda and Russell Hill are under threat, while the other at risk ACT centre listed is in Jervis Bay.

Seven others, in Braddon, Deakin, Garran, Isaacs, Kambah, Kingston and Turner, are expected to stay open in 2009.

The figures fall well short of the ACT's closest neighbours NSW and Victoria, which stand to lose more than 100 centres each.

South Australia, Western Australia and Queensland also have high numbers of probable closures, with several centres in Adelaide's west likely to shut before Christmas.

However, percentage wise, the Northern Territory has been hit the hardest, with half of their ABC Learning Centres unlikely to continue operating through next year.

Despite the ACT having faired well compared to other states and territories, more than 150 families may still be without professional childcare in 2009, since competition for places is already tight.

ABC Learning Centres employs around 16,000 staff and care for more than 100,000 children across Australia.

Union officials met with receivers McGrath Nicol on Friday to assess the viability of keeping the remaining centres open, but a union spokeswoman said it yielded ''little success''.
