ACT racks up $3.4m on travel

05 Jul, 2009 10:56 AM
ACT GOVERNMENT departments spent $3.4million on overseas and domestic travel in the past financial year and have no plans to slash spending this year.

The Opposition says the Government should investigate cutting the travel budget.

But Chief Minister Jon Stanhope says the Government's travel budget is modest compared to other jurisdictions.

Figures provided by the Government to the Sunday Canberra Times show that ACT Health has the most frequent flyers, spending $1.045million on domestic travel last year and $93,000 on international trips.

The figures include the most recent travel costs from ACT government departments, with the exception of Education and Training.

Justice and Community Safety was next in line with a travel budget which the Government put at $700,000, despite the department providing a higher figure $735,000 to the Assembly's budget estimates committee.

Territory and Municipal Services, which includes portfolios such as sport and recreation, had the third highest travel costs, spending about $680,000 on domestic and international trips.

Jon Stanhope's Chief Minister's Department spent $250,000 $150,000 domestically and $100,000 on overseas travel.

The Government says travel budgets for this financial year will be similar or slightly less than the spending in 2008-09.

Some departments also have yet to determine their travel budget for the year.

Deputy Opposition Leader Brendan Smyth said it was ''interesting'' the Government would not be making savings in the travel budget.

''Where it's appropriate of course public servants should travel and attend training and have face-to-face meetings,'' he said.

''But given the times, here's an area where the Government can tighten and control and make a difference.''

Mr Stanhope said travel was necessary for the operation of Government and included travel for emergency personnel doing disaster work interstate and athletes who were representing the ACT.

The Department of Housing and Community Services spent $228,000 on domestic and international travel for its housing, disabilities, ageing and multicultural affairs staff.

The ACT Planning and Land Authority spent $95,000 on domestic travel last year.

The authority, which handles Canberra's planning and development, increased its budget slightly to $98,000 and has no plans for international trips.

At the bottom of the ladder were agencies such as the Office of Industrial Relations, which spent $21,000 last year.

The newly created Department of Climate Change, Environment and Water, which was born out of a cabinet reshuffle earlier this year, also managed to spend $62,000 on domestic and international travel.
