Actew gets go-ahead for $100m water lifeline

26 Mar, 2009 05:55 AM
The ACT is a step closer to securing a $100 million Murrumbidgee to Googong water pipeline after the ACT Government gave Actew the green light to proceed with the project.

Actew also received approval to buy and store high-security water in Tantangara Dam in the Snowy Mountains as part of the Government's plan to secure water supply for Canberra and Queanbeyan.

The pipeline must meet Commonwealth, ACT and NSW environmental and development guidelines before construction can start.

Building is expected to begin in February and take 15 months to complete.

Actew general manager Mark Sullivan said the projects would take the ACT as close as possible to water security. ''By 2013, we will have permanent conservation measures which should not worry anyone,'' Mr Sullivan said.

''Canberra does not want open slather with the waste we used to have.''

He expected Stage 3 water restrictions to apply next summer.

Environment Minister Simon Corbell said the pipeline would deliver up to 20 gigalitres of water to the ACT.

The Government has also approved the $150million upgrade of the Cotter Dam.

This yo-yo behaviour of our Water "politician" annoys me furiously! For a month earlier this year our dams were advertised on barry drive over 50% full. Actew gets excited, and says yes everyone can go trigger happy with their car cleaning. water plants, i believe they called it the great spring clean. Can you stop reacting short term. So what if we haev rainfall for one fortnight, it is not enough to sustain our usage over a long term!

There go the land values in the area the pipe-line will cross, not that the emissions from the massive gas fired power station at Williamsdale will improve prices any and I reckon it's debatable how much water security it will offer, sure more than now but Tantangara get it's water pumped up from Lake Eucumbene which is at record lows, soon to reach even greater record lows I bet when the Murrumbidgee to Googong pipe-line starts drawing Snowy Mountains water,I wonder how low the Snowy Hydro people will let the once mighty Lake Eucumbene drain down to? Lets hope it rains....soon.

Anything ACTEW wants ACTEW gets as long as there is money to be made.

dusty hits the nail on the head - this water's headed to the gas-fired power stations in Williamsdale and Hume (for cooling purposes). Only part of this potable water will end up in our homes, yet we'll bear the full costs. Thanks a bunch.

I was out for a bit of a fish with friends at Googong foreshores dam & nature reserve today,Friday 27 March and by the looks of the floating algal matter in the water there is about to be a massive blue green algal bloom in the upper reaches of Googong dam, maybe it's got something to do with the many hereford cattle grazing inside the NATURE RESERVE and chopping up the muddy banks with their hooves & crapping every-where along the banks in the water supply, who is managing that place & for what purpose? No good pumping good 'bidgee water into a sewer pond for Canberran's to drink.
