Airport to 'bring in $1.23b if expanded'

23 Dec, 2009 08:05 AM
An expanded and redeveloped Canberra Airport will bring $1.23billion to the region's economy, according to the Tourism and Transport Forum.

The figures come from the group's submission to Queanbeyan City Council, opposing plans to rezone Tralee, south of the city, for housing.

The Tourism and Transport Forum represents major airports, airlines and other companies in the tourism sector.

''TTF and our members have consistently argued that there is overwhelming evidence against residential development at Tralee,'' the group's submission reads.

Canberra Airport is spending $350 million on a big expansion for its terminals and surrounding precinct.

The forum estimated the expansion would bring $1.23 billion in spending to the Canberra region.

It would also create $280 million in wages and salaries for 6650 workers.

Queanbeyan council wants to rezone land at Tralee, south of the city, to allow a new development that will add schools, shopping and thousands of new homes to the region.

But the Tralee development lies under the Canberra Airport flight path and airport management fears the proposal will scupper its plans to turn Canberra into a 24-hour freight hub.

Lets hope logic and reason prevail..... Queanbeyan council needs to use its brain and can any ideas of rezoning land at tralee.... a 24 hour "international airport" in canberra will give much needed benefits to Queanbeyan also.....

I flew in from Melbourne yesterday right over the top of Jerrabomberra so I don't see why there would be a problem with the development of Tralee (it was so close I almost felt that I could reach out and touch them). People who buy there know that it's under a flight path, just like other cities in Australia.

If Canberrans get to choose between the Tralee development and the airport as a freight hub there is no question that we'd prefer the houses to the noise. If ther Hawker example is followed; cash seems to trump facility every time.

$1.23b over 10 years? 20? One hundred? How is the region defined? How much of this bonanza could still be reaped with a curfew? And can something that bills itself as an organisation "representing the top 200 owners, operators and investors in Australia's tourism, transportation and aviation sectors" really be relied upon in compiling figures such as these? Let's ask the Australian Builders Association or the Real Estate Institute of Australia what they estimate the value to the economy of Tralee might be - I'm sure they'll be just as reliable.
