Alleged invader knew his victim, 16

A Canberra man involved in an alleged home invasion in Greenway on Sunday had been in a relationship with one of the occupants of the house, a court has heard.

Police allege five men wearing balaclavas and armed with machetes, knives and baseball bats broke into the Greenway house at about 8.30pm on Sunday and assaulted two men, aged 19 and 20, as well as a 16-year-old girl.

The two male victims received cuts and bruises and were treated by ACT Ambulance officers at the location, while the teenage girl was uninjured.

The assailants allegedly left with a laptop, mobile phone and wallet, and also damaged a car outside the house as they were leaving.

Paul Liam New, 19, of Kambah, was arrested on Monday.

Police also arrested Kai Yuen, 24, after searching his house and finding a knife and clothes matching those described by the victims at the scene of the attack.

They appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court yesterday, charged with aggravated burglary, theft, assault and property damage.

Constable Dan Williams told the court New had been positively identified by the victims.

He said it had emerged that New had been in a relationship with the female victim, and she was in a new relationship with one of the male occupants.

New also told police in a taped interview that he had been with Yuen at a family barbecue on the night of the attacks.

In a bail application in the ACT Magistrates Court yesterday, New's lawyer Peter Johnston said his client was unlikely to leave the Territory because he had employment and was caring for his mother.

But magistrate Karen Fryar refused bail, saying the prosecution's case was strong.

Yuen's lawyer, Stephen Stubbs, said his client should be granted bail based on what he described as a weak, circumstantial case against him.

But Ms Fryar also remanded Yuen in custody.

New and Yuen are due to appear again on May 5.
