Anzac Parade deluge reveals long-lost medals

09 Apr, 2009 08:02 AM
The deluge that damaged the historic Lone Pine late last year washed up a treasure hidden for more than a decade.

While attention was on the bough of the Lone Pine laid low by the storms, the run-off exposed a set of Vietnam medals buried nearby.

Lee Taylor was holidaying with friends in Canberra early this year. The 22-year-old IT worker from Melbourne and his friends were walking from the Australian War Memorial when he spotted what they thought were toys from the gift shop lying in a pile of leaves by the side of the road.

Mr Taylor said, ''I initially thought they might have been fake, the gift shop might sell little replicas like that for kids to play with.'' He quickly realised they were far too heavy to be fakes, and turned them over to the memorial.

The memorial enlisted the help of the Department of Veterans Affairs to identify and track down the family.

The medals belonged to the late Keith Roberts, of Melbourne.

That tree fell because of lack of water, nothing to do with any storms,....

Wake up "Reality", the real story here should be that this man was probably a veteran with a strong emotional and probably physical ties to our war dead at Lone Pine and Gallipoli as a whole, not a cheap backhander about environmental issues.

No such luck at Scone where the Lone Pine Tree died due to the way it was unceremonially ripped out of the ground. as the roots snapped the accompaning noise was like gun fire. Reason for removal was the councils desire to build a new council chambers on the site.

Reality, the grounds of the War Memorial ARE watered. They are not subject to the Territory's current water restrictions. That's why they're so lush and green. Bob's right this is a story about medals, not the drought.

It'd be nice to encase them in an exhibit by the base of the tree.
