Apartments to tower over lake

07 Apr, 2009 07:47 AM
High-rise apartment blocks on Lake Ginninderra and in the Belconnen Town Centre will be a shock at first but people will get used to them, Chief Minister Jon Stanhope says.

His vision is to increase the density in the Belconnen Town Centre and see more commercial and residential blocks near the water.

''I have lived in Belconnen for the last 40 years and I think that first tall building will be confronting. But greater residential reasonably adjacent to the lake is desirable.

''The town should be incorporated into the lake.''

Hindmarsh has already secured a prime position close to the water for its 18-storey Altitude Apartments.

The block is between Chandler Street and Emu Bank and has direct access to the lake foreshore and clear views of the water. Hindmarsh expects approval of their development application this week and the project will begin mid-year to finish in 2012.

It will contain 236 apartments and there will be two other five- or six-storey buildings with 109 apartments. The ground floors will offer office and retail space.

Hindmarsh development manager Brett Smith said the block would be taller than some other residential projects planned for the area to take advantage of the views.

One such smaller block is the Oracle apartments on College Street. Oracle is marketing the Belconnen master plan renewal as a great opportunity for investors.

Mr Smith said Hindmarsh was cognisant about creating a harmonious relationship with the commercial tenants across the street.

He did not expect any problems with noise.

Watch out! It's that bloke who pushed the data centre and gas-fired power station down south and is inflicting his planning expertise on other parts of our city now. Good luck to you in your rounds of "consultation".

Consultation, you must be kidding, its the ugliest carrot dangled to Canberran's. Over the years it has proved useless...

It'll be great development for the Belconnen Town Centre and bring what is a vacant dead zone of Emu bank to life!

What about the increases in traffic this is going to bring? We need developments and extra people like we need a hole in the head!!

well i lived in canberra for 30 years watched it grow, from civic being the only shopping complex , then 7 years ago moved to the coast because Canberra is becoming a concrete jungle, i live where i can see trees, go for walks and would not live in Canberra again, too many buildings there, as this article shows with more apartments going in, lovely people though that live there

Why should anyone have to get used to something that is shocking? If it is 'shocking' then why not find something else that would delight? If the foreshores have to inhabited at all, then surely it is possible to find another way. Canberra was always meant to be a bush capital - not a concrete jungle. The developers have lost their way.

Leangirl - you are nearly right in your comment, it should, I think, read 'Stanhope has lost his way.

Jon moved from Kaleen to Bruce. Perhaps he is now planning his next move to a high rise apartment on the shores of Lake Ginninderra!

Perhaps Stanhope has planned has scheduled the completion of the high rise on the shores of Lake Ginninderra just in time for retirement!

Leangirl - this IS the developers' way. They are in it for profit to themselves and nothing else. They just need compliant governments to hand them the opportunity.
