Asbestos waste dumped

15 Nov, 2009 09:54 AM
ASBESTOS has been dumped illegally by the side of the road in Hume, prompting the ACT Government to cordon off the site and call for witnesses to come forward.

The pile of suspicious materials was discovered beside Alderson Drive in Hume on Friday morning by a Sunday Canberra Times photographer and reporter.

The Department of Territory and Municipal Services was contacted, and immediately investigated the incident.

''An inspection on Friday afternoon revealed that some of the illegally dumped materials contained asbestos,'' a department spokesman said. The area was immediately fenced off and signage was erected.

An authorised asbestos removalist disposed of the material yesterday morning.

Anyone who might have spotted the offenders is encouraged to contact ACT Policing.

Dumping can also be reported to Canberra Connect on 132 281, including details of the alleged offenders such as car registration and time of offence.

Under recently strengthened laws people can face fines of up to $10,000 for illegal dumping.
