Big names in retail listed for DFO

FREEDOM Furniture, electrical appliance retailer Clive Anthony's, Bay Leather Republic, Nick Scali Furniture and JB Hi-Fi could be just a few of the stores to open in Canberra's soon-to-be-completed Direct Factory Outlet.

A list of stores became available after a floor plan of the Fyshwick site was provided to The Canberra Times.

The plan shows much of the sprawling complex dominated by homewares and electrical retailers, but clothing and shoe shops make up a large proportion of the site. There is also a small food court. In total, there are than 120 different stores.

Noticeably absent, however, was Ikea a furniture store many Canberrans had pinned hopes on being part of the complex.

The plan is believed to be an early version, with stores subject to change and leases thought to be in the process of being signed.

A call around some of the listed stores had mixed results with some knowing nothing of their seemingly impending relocation or outright denying a move, while others confirmed they would be part of the complex.

Comment and verification was not available from DFO parent company Austrexx.

Among some of the more notable fashion outlets listed on the floor plan were Witchery, Table Eight, Portmans, Cue, Seduce, Dotti, Cotton On, Rivers and Jay Jays. Puma and Converse were also listed as expected tenants.

And if all those listed on the plan set up shop, Canberrans will be spoilt for choice for accessories with Tony Bianco, Diana Ferrari, Joanne Mercer, Kate Hill and Aquila included.

For homewares Godfrey's, Snooze, Focus on Furniture, Oz Design, House, Kleenmaid and Balinese and Indonesian specialist Villa and Hut were listed as prospective tenants on the plan.

The $140 million factory outlet is expected to open in the first week of September but has faced controversy since being announced mainly due to its proximity to factory outlet centre Brand Depot located at Canberra Airport.

Brand Depot recently launched litigation against DFO under the Trade Practices Act.

The move follows Supreme Court proceedings begun last year by Brand Depot, linked to land zoning.

Austrexx paid $39 million for the 7ha bulky goods retailing site in Fyshwick in 2005.
