Blow-out on batts set to hit $100m

11 Mar, 2010 10:23 AM
The cost of fixing the Rudd Government's bungled home insulation scheme looks set to exceed $100 million, with at least 200,000 homes to be inspected for fire and electricity risks.

Foil insulation fitted in more than 50,000 households under the botched rebate scheme will also be either ripped out or made safe by installing safety switches, while former senior public servant Allan Hawke will undertake an independent review of the scheme, due by the end of March.

Deputy climate change and energy efficiency minister Greg Combet announced the long list of changes yesterday, including an aggressive crackdown on fraud.

''Let me assure all those who may have participated in non-compliant or fraudulent behaviour in connection with the home insulation program, that we will track you down,'' Mr Combet said.

But Opposition environment spokesman Greg Hunt claims estimates by National Electrical and Communications Association shows costs could be as high as $450 million.

''That's basically $200 million for the safety inspections, and $250 million to fix the problem. You're looking at around $1000 a home,'' he said.

What an utter disgrace! As a taxpayer I am furious at the waste of money. This government has to go!

Why not wait until you get the final costs, instead of guessing, so much negativity!.

Why is this a problem for the Federal government ? This is another example of the incompetent building industry allowing cowboy installers and the lack of enforcement by the State governments (who are responsible for their building code) to verify the quality of the building trade. The building code isn't a guarantee of quality ! This type of insulation is installed in Europe and North America without any of these problems. I would like to see the installers prosecuted and all remediation costs taken out of the installers assets.

Government is talking about installing safety switches. These will prevent electric shocks and to some degree electrical fires. However perhaps they should also consider the additional installation of Arc Fault Circuit Breakers. There are many articles written on the benefit of these devices.

Good to see the current Government righting wrongs that a few incompetent installers are responsible for...I'd bet many aussie voters much rather this incompetent Government than the last incompetent Government under Mr Howard & company...or a return to that under Mr Abbott & Co.

DUSTY, going by the polls, it seems about half of all Australians would rather return to the Howard government....the other half seem happy to put up with the current incompetent mob.

As time goes by and this debacle gets bigger and bigger Garrett will have to consider his present position because of the harm he is inflicting on the government. There can only be one answer to the problem and that is this claytons minister will have to resign. On the other hand I hope he stays to become a symbol for all us voters highlighting the incompetency of this labor government.

No large project EVER gets through to completion without some problem or other, when you consider you are dealing with people if you are intelligent you would realise that something is BOUND to go wrong, to expect perfection where humans are involved, is stupidity!. So much for the rantings of the opposition!.

Of course it is so much more frigging serious than blowing Afghanistan and Iraq to bits and wasting $3 billion on locking up a few thousand refugees over the years of the Howard government. The media have beaten a non-story of a few shonky operators into a massive waste. A few accidents with over 1.1 million homes insulated is not a catastrophe. Good lord, it's like the constant whining about non-existent people smuggling.
