Bullying claims bode ill for ACT Health

14 Jun, 2010 11:17 AM
More current and former ACT Health workers have come forward over claims of bullying and harassment and dissatisfaction with the way their concerns have been handled.

These workers are in addition to others whose complaints were recorded and are being reviewed as part of an investigation into practices within the obstetrics and gynaecology unit.

Nurses and clinicians are among workers who have made more than 40 complaints against ACT Health in the little more than three years.

More than half of those complaints have come in the first months of this year, with 19 recorded to May 18.

The Opposition says a number of the people have come forward in the wake of the obstetrics and gynaecology review, indicating a systemic bullying problem across ACT Health.

ACT Health acting chief executive Peggy Brown has described the level of complaints as no different to any other department. And despite a zero tolerance approach to bullying, Dr Brown has acknowledged some things could be done better.

She said she was aware of instances where complainants had not been informed of the outcome of investigations due to privacy concerns. The department was getting legal advice on how it could change the process.

''My understanding is there may well be cases where there hasn't been closure and that has contributed to the perception that nothing has been done.''

She said the department was also looking at the skill base of managers to deal with the issue and the possibility of extra training in the area.
