Canberra man treated for swine flu

Canberra has its first confirmed case of swine flu.

A man, 41, is under week-long quarantine and is being treated after his condition was confirmed on Monday evening.

The Canberran resident travelled from the USA to Sydney early on Sunday (May 24) and flew from there to Canberra.

His first symptoms appeared at about 2pm on Sunday afternoon. He is suffering from mild illness only and is at home being treated with anti-viral medication.

About 48 people are known to have been in contact with him, most of them being guests at his young daughter's birthday party.

The National Incident Room has been notified of this case and the details of his flights. The National Incident Room will get passenger manifests ACT Health in collaboration with Centrelink will contact any passengers who may have had contact with the man tomorrow.

The National Swine Flu Hotline can be contacted on 180 2007.
