Canberra schoolchildren are the nation's best readers and their grammatical skills are equal best with Victorians.
But nationwide testing has shown that one in 10 Australian students fail to meet basic reading, writing and numeracy standards.
The results of the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy, which tests students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, were issued yesterday. They found students from the ACT, Victoria and NSW were among the best performers, but Northern Territory children continued to lag far behind.
The tests measure skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation and numeracy.
Canberra's Year 9 students topped the overall state and territory tables, Years 3 and 7 were second, and Year 5 was third.
