 Canberra suffers tall poppy syndrome

Canberra suffers tall poppy syndrome

06 Jul, 2009 07:51 AM
Canberra's tourism industry suffers from a lack of national pride in the capital and also needs to woo international tour groups, a local tourism advocate says.

Olive grower Peter O'Clery was made a member of the Order of Australia (AM) last month for services to the tourism industry.

His career in tourism included more than 10 years as the chief executive of the Australian Tourism Industry Association.

In 2004 he helped found the popular Capital Region Farmer's Market at Exhibition Park, which is credited with boosting interest in local and seasonal produce.

Mr O'Clery said the Canberra region was developing its own characteristics and local produce which would help tourism.

The capital enjoyed four seasons and had the benefit of seasonal food and attractions.

But tourism operators found it difficult to turn a profit from Canberra as an international holiday destination.

''We haven't really been able to attract many international groups, partly because a lot of the people who are the inbound operators can't see how they can send a tour group to Canberra and actually get a percentage out of it for themselves,'' he said.

''It's a very difficult issue to address.''

Canberra isn't the most interesting place in Australia. If I was coming from over seas I would be wanting to see things like the Daintree and Uluru and the theme parks in QLD, the Kimberly's etc. Canberra is a boring place, no beach no snow, no fantastic tourist attractions. We have the museum and the parliament houses.....that's about it. Everywhere has botanical gardens and everythin we have to offer can be found in other places that also have added attractions. We need to give Canberra something unique and something that will make people want to be in the nations capital. We need to be able to provide an experience that you can't get anywhere else. We need to provide attractions for people of all ages for example a young group of tourists are probably not all interested in the museum or parliament houses. I live in Canberra, I love it here but I have to admit that it can be boring and I would definitely go to a more interesting place for a holiday.

bel: there are many city's around the world which do not have a beach or snow so I don't think that's the issue. Tourists turn up and see the Parliamentary triangle and maybe Civic and think that's all there is to Canberra. I would like to see Govt build up Civic ie. more residents in the Civic centre otherwise on especially weekends to tourists it appears as no-one is around.

Canberra is an awesome place but doesnt really cater to tourists.. I guess because the city doesnt need them. Its a beautiful city, and from where I sit at work I can see across the lake.. national library and then parliament house. This would be a great thing for tourists to see but they only really have black mountain or Red Hill... our tourist office is in Dickson which says it all... The people who live here on the whole love it and I am happy for people from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to hate Canberra because I would much prefer it over them flocking to live here. One of the great things is our proximity to the Snowy Mountains and South Coast so really it would be smart to work in conjuction with the tourism effort of these areas aswell as the wineries of the area.

Bel...there will never be anything exciting in Canberra because the wowsers will have us believe it would be too noisey, too costly to taxpayers or too destructive to native grasses and legless lizards. The average Canberra wowsers idea of a rivetting time is hand washing their woollen cardigans while sipping on a glass of cheap cask wine and listening to ABC radio.

I have been a resident of Canberra for around 30 years and agree that it is a lovely place to live. Yes it is true that we don't have anything to offer international tourists - no beaches or snowfields on our doorstep although they are within driving distance. I don't know what we could do to give Canberra that little bit extra for tourism because any improvement attempted here would be thwarted by the NIMBY's (Not In My Backard) who end up wasting taxpayers money by forcing litigation on the ACT Government so that when the need arises for something the dollars aren't there. We don't even have a decent public transport system - light rail has just been quashed yet again! People here fight growth and development - we need to grow, we need the population and the dollars if we are to take our place in the international community. It is Australia's Capital City so STOP HOLDING US BACK!!!!

I think we need to promote the war memorial and ANZAC Parade more. They are wonderful places and very underrated. They're not for everyone, though, and we need more attractions.
