Convict Beard grows to suburb status

15 May, 2009 08:02 AM
The latest suburb in Canberra will be known as Beard in honour of an ''industrious'' convict.

The new industrial estate next to Oaks Estate will be called Beard after convict turned pioneering landowner Timothy Beard.

ACT Planning and Land Authority boss Neil Savery says the 45ha was technically not a suburb, but more an industrial estate. The land is leased for 145 blocks for industrial purposes.

''It's not large enough for, say, a prime minister's name to be allocated to it, which is typically held for very large suburbs. And, of course, you have to be dead as well,'' Mr Savery said.
