Corbell's 'virtual' court scuttled

10 Sep, 2010 09:56 AM
The ACT Government's proposal to add a third tier to the Canberra court system is dead in the water despite having allocated $900,000 for the idea in this financial year.

Attorney-General Simon Corbell said last night the Government would now embark on separate reforms, but claimed they would not address systemic delays within the Supreme Court.

The measures, expected to be detailed in full today, would see jurisdiction for the Magistrates Court increased to cover offences with a maximum penalty of five years or less and civil cases with a maximum claim of at least $100,000.

The new proposal would also see reforms to the Bail Act, allowing appeals to be heard in the Magistrates Court.

For more on this story, including details of why the Greens decided against backing the plan, see the print edition of today's Canberra Times.

Is it wise to bestow on a magistrate the power to incarcerate a citizen for ... 5 years?
