Crackdown on ACT car hoons

29/08/2008 1:05:00 PM
Car hoons have been targeted by police in Canberra, with authorities shutting off a rural arterial road after receiving a tip off about an illegal street race.

More than 60 drivers were breath tested, 11 cars slapped with defect notices and eight traffic fines were issued in a major clampdown last night on dangerous and irresponsible driver behaviour.

Police closed off a section of Naas Rd, south of the ACT rural town of Tharwa, after receiving a tip off about a street race and burnout meet.

Traffic Operations Acting Superintendent Peter Davis said the operation was part of an ongoing effort to reduce antisocial driver behaviour on Canberra's roads.

"Police are able to target these drivers with the assistance of the public and using unmarked police vehicles," he said.

"This group appeared to have arranged this meet which was quickly shut down by police.

"We will continue to target illegal behaviour and we would encourage anyone who may see this type of behaviour to contact police."

Hmm makes you wonder if the government would make good on its promise of a dragway in Canberra would this happen. I doubt it - have a look at what is run every Wednesday night at WSID in Sydney, gives motor enthusists somewhere to do these things in a controlled environment. This problem is never going to go away while people have cars but no where to persue there interest. Canberra is full of old whingers and people who love to be killjoys. Why not look at giving everyones interests a fair go we have a multitude of cultural attractions that are of no interest to these people but you dont hear them complaining is a dragway that bad of a request really if you dont want to attend dont, nobody is forcing you. At the end of the day people need to be responsible for there actions but it is also the governments responsibility to ensure that it offers the same resources to everyone. If we had a dragway than i would be all for people having there cars confiscated and crushed if caught doing illegal things on the streets but until the government stops its lies and betrayls than part of the buck stops with them

Well done to ACT Policing. Heaven help us if a tragedy had occurred. Again while I have no interest in it where is the Dragway much promised by our current batch of ACT Polititions.

I'm not a revhead or whatever they're called, am not interested in motor sports and don't know much at all about cars other than put petrol in here and sit there... but I agree with the sentiments of smoothvl - give the people of canberra a dragway and it would probably get these youngsters off the public streets. After all it was one of those promises (that were never delivered), doesn't do any harm, and would make lots of people much happier. Win - win (except for the pollies who don't what to approve it - why not I wonders???).

Dragway, dragway!! I haven't heard that mentioned for 4 years - is there an election coming up?

@smooth and bruce The two issues are not related. Just because you don't have a special venue for racing does not make it acceptable to endanger innocent bystanders with reckless and dangerous driving. If you want to risk your own life by pretending that you are a professional racer that is your business. When you endanger the lives of others its a different story. If you cannot bear to forego this pleasure, move to a city that has a racetrack or buy a playstation 3 and play gran turismo. But don't try to use this as an excuse for extremely reckless and dangerous behavior.

Me being a car enthusiast I do not support this type of hooning at all. But if the ACT gov won't give us a drag strip they promise what do they expect to happen? I drag strip is needed badly, there are no two ways about it and the sooner Canberra get behind it the sooner this sort of thing will stop.

I'd rather my taxpayer dollars are spent to fix potholed Canberra roads - not on a drag strip .
