Cracker night goes up in smoke

25 Aug, 2009 07:38 AM
Canberrans have enjoyed or endured their last cracker night with the sale, storage and use of consumer fireworks banned in the ACT.

Industrial Relations Minister John Hargreaves said the prohibition was a response to an unacceptable level of misuse.

He said owning fireworks was illegal already. ''What that instrument, I signed last Friday, merely did was take out the three days of the [Queen's Birthday] long weekend as exemptions. You couldn't have them in your house last Wednesday your leftovers were illegal''.

A six-day amnesty over the next three weekends would give Canberrans the opportunity to dispose of any fireworks and professional fireworks displays would continue in the capital.

''The reasons for such a ban are about property damage, injury to domestic animals and wildlife and of course the general disruption,'' Mr Hargreaves said.

Despite the move having the backing of the Greens, Opposition industrial relations minister Vicki Dunne said the Liberals would not support a total ban.

The Opposition would move a disallowance motion in the Assembly as well as a motion to put together a discussion paper to allow the community to address how to make cracker night better and safer for the community.

It's about time. The irresponsible use of these devices and the destruction and injury caused by them should've seen them, and and any exemptions to their possesion, outlawed a long time ago. Why it took the ACT government so long to catch up with the States amazes me. Having said that; bravo to the Stanhope government for putting the good of the masses before the pleasures of the minority for once.

Another casuality of the fun police!... We used to live in a free country, what was know as the "lucky country". Now we live in a "society" of do-gooders and political correctness, future generations will surley look back and laugh at the stupidity and ignorance of Baby boomers, Gen X & Y... I am going to start a petition to have cyclist banned because they annoy me like fireworks annoyed 5% of people.....

Now all we have to do is ban domestic animals and everybody will be able to live in peace. I think that should be the next Nanny State push.

Shame on us for having any sort of fun whatsoever. I live in Kambah and save for a couple of fireworks I didn't hear anything outside of the hours that were designated for their use. Pet owners should be well aware by now that there are a couple of nights in the year where their animals will need additional supervision and deal with it. Insofar as damage is concerned, I don't think that associated fireworks damage cost the govt nearly as much as the guy who drove down our street and took out 100+ rubbish bins that all needed replacing. Where there is a will, there's a way. Tired of being dictated to by a conservative government. No motorway, no alcohol, no fireworks.

What about the other 333 days of the year when dog owners can't be bothered getting their dogs to shut up?
