'Credible threats' to life of accused Rebel killer

18 Apr, 2009 11:48 AM
Police hold grave fears that members of the Rebels Motorcycle Club may try to murder a 20-year-old man accused of shooting dead one of their own last month.

Russell Field is accused of shooting dead Richard ''Rebel Rick'' John Roberts and his associate Gregory Carrigan in Chisholm on March 24.

He has been kept in protective custody in the three weeks since, and yesterday appeared in court for the first time, amid heightened security throughout the court precinct.

Police with a sniffer dog had earlier patrolled the court foyer and carried out a bomb sweep of the courtroom where Field's bail application was to be heard before Justice Hilary Penfold.

Field was led into the courtroom surrounded by security guards.

The court heard Field had been at home in his garage with a friend when the two victims arrived at the house and threatened him.
