Data hub forced to look for new digs

14 Nov, 2008 06:33 AM
Proponents of the Tuggeranong data centre have been forced to relocate it because of the threat the Greens and Liberals would pass legislation to kill the project.

ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope confirmed yesterday Technical Real Estate wrote to the Government this week asking it to explore alternative sites for the controversial $1 billion data centre, despite an environmental impact study finding no reason for it not to proceed at the proposed location.

In response, Chief Minister's Department chief executive Andrew Cappie-Wood is convening a taskforce to find a new site for the project and identify any legal issues.

Mr Stanhope said the Government did not want TRE to abandon the site, but the Greens and the Liberals had teamed up to defeat it ''by hook or by crook''. The threat of the parties passing retrospective legislation in the Legislative Assembly forced TRE's hand.

''We don't have the numbers, we don't have control of this issue, that's what minority government delivers,'' he said.

''The Liberals and the Greens have indicated that they intend to work together on this particular issue to ensure that the data centre does not proceed on its current site.''

He said the Greens and Liberals would be embarrassed by the results of the environmental impact study, which found there were no environmental or health concerns with the site. The report will be made public on Monday.

''Residents of Macarthur will not see the data centre, they will not smell the data centre, they will not hear the data centre and their health will not be affected by it.''

Stanhope is obviously very disappointed in the people of the ACT. Obviously, he would have preferred to dismiss the people and elect another.

Finally some sanity. We need the data centre but lets not forget the name is misleading, its a POWER STATION and Data Centre. It just needs to be in the right place.

Typical of the Greens to blindly barrel on with things without any regard to real issues (the EIP gave a go-ahead). As for the Liberals all they are doing is making noise, again without a clue ... it's all they are capable of doing. Imagine if they had actually formed government *shiver*.

What a joke this is. So now any development can be rejected because of the NIMBY factor, even if it passes all development criteria. Now all you need to defeat a proposal is to get a group of people who know nothing about the development to scream their heads off, until the government panders to them.

I think it's time we all stopped work and hugged a tree.

The residents of the Tuggeranong Valley can now put their heads on their pillows at night without the buzzing of power station turbines in their ears. The initial decsion to put a POWER STATION next to Macarthur was a "dumb decision" twelve months ago and that has never changed!

There are lots of uninformed people swallowing the developer's and government's line here. Of course the EIS says it's all okay - they paid for it. The simple fact is the WHO standards they are applying are outdated and there is a wealth of information that says the emissions from these gas-fired power stations are straighout bad for you (especially if you're old - like the entire population is getting! - young, or asthmatic). Data centres - great idea. 4,700,000 tonnes of green house gases per year to run it (and make a buck for the overseas owners) - too pricey. FAIL anywhere in Canberra.

Why all this fuss when there is a new data centre development at Mitchell in an Industrial Zone that is as green as a Data Centre can be. It is away from residents and will be a great thing for the ACT. I hope they are getting half the support that the other project has had.

What is actually the problem in basing the centre out of town? For example, the Space Tracking station seems to be doing just fine, why not a similar location for this?

If there are no real concerns - and if it is supposed to be in the Mugga Lane area - next to a tip - it sounds like a perfect location. Commuter traffic causes more pollution than a properly run gas fired power station. Perhaps biofuels (or methane from the tip) could also be considered.
