Disciplined Corrective Services staff back at work

07 Sep, 2009 08:06 AM
Two Corrective Services staff disciplined for using excessive force on prisoners have returned to duty.

Separate complaints were made against the unnamed officers on March24 and 26 this year about incidents at Belconnen Remand Centre and the Court Transport Unit respectively.

Corrective Services officials would not state the circumstances of the incidents or the full punishment meted out to the staff.

But both officers were required to complete remedial training.

They were stood down with full pay for several weeks while Corrective Services investigated the matter.

Corrective Services executive director James Ryan said a prisoner and other staff reported the incident at the defunct Belconnen Remand Centre, while a prisoner made the second complaint immediately after the incident.

He said in both cases the questions of whether force was needed and how it was issued were examined.

''In short, both gave us cause for concern about whether the force used was excessive,'' Mr Ryan said.

''In neither case was there any injury of a serious nature, [the issue was] just the way the force was used.''
