 Dog kills pet, wounds woman

Dog kills pet, wounds woman

24 Nov, 2009 06:39 AM
A 70-year-old woman was taken to hospital and her dog killed after an early morning dog attack in Braddon.

Navia Van Maurik was having microsurgery last night to repair a finger on her left hand that was fractured, dislocated and suffered tissue damage.

The injuries followed an attack during which an American Staffordshire dog mauled and killed Ms Van Maurik's small Papillion, Teddy.

Neighbour Sandra Marshall and her dog, Bella, were walking with Ms Van Maurik and Teddy in Lowanna Street just before 7am yesterday when the attack happened.

The pair had taken the early morning walk with their dogs every day for the past three years.

Ms Marshall said a dog approached them with its hackles raised when the pair picked up their dogs to try and protect them.

''[It] grabbed hold of the little dog Teddy. He took Teddy and Navia down and he just continued to flick the dog around like a rag doll. I was kicking it in the head and it wouldn't stop,'' she said.

The attacking dog eventually let go of Teddy who died a short time later and ran off. Ms Van Maurik was taken to Canberra Hospital.

Graham James Louis, who said he was the owner of Storm, an American Staffordshire terrier believed to be responsible for the attack, said the incident was out of character. He said the dog had escaped on Sunday night from his Dickson home before he received a call yesterday notifying him of the incident.

''I'm still very concerned about the whole issue and at that time I was flabbergasted to say the least because it's out of his character to do things like that,'' Mr Louis said.

He said the dog had only been in one fight but acknowledged Storm may need to be put down.

A Department of Territory and Municipal Services spokesman said the dog had been seized. Domestic Animal Services is investigating the attack.

That dog should be humanely destroyed. It's owner says "it's only been in one fight" - this wasn't a fight it was a savage unwarranted attack on a small defenceless dog. I cannot understand why people choose to have such dangerous breeds of dogs as this. They are either totally ignorant or have an "image" problem which can only be satisfied by having such a dog!

I can not imagine how blown out of proportion and exaggerated this is. The public and the media love this crap and love to target certain breeds of dog, so when word gets out that one 'attacked' it's all over the media and I am sure the description of what happened is a slight twist of the truth. Let me ask if a shih tzu (added to dangerous dog list), chihuahua or any other breed of dog attacked that hasn't been hyped up in the media, would anyone care, would it be public knowledge or would it be let go because everyone has a fixation on the pitbull, staffy breeds. I am sure there are more important things going on in the world than this. I think it's wrong of the media to attack certain breeds of dog and make the public scared. Responsible pet owners like myself deserve to walk down the street and not have people snigger and be scared because they have seen bulls**t on the media. Give it a rest for a while.

Are these the same dogs that we the ACT public miss out on having fireworks for????. Mogrel killers who roam the streets??

Here we go again. Yet another attack from one of this breed. And AGAIN, we have an owner who swears and declares it's out of character. It's totally IN character for this breed. I am SICK and TIRED of dogs on the loose in this town. I've lived here for two years now and walk my two dogs every day, only to be accosted at least two or three times a week by unaccompanied dogs off leads. This never happened when I lived in Melbourne or indeed in Tassie. Why oh why can't dog owners in this town be more responsible? We shouldn't have to fear death and destruction every time we want to take our friends out for an afternoon walk, but that's what it's coming to. My sincere condolences to the poor lady.

Owner can't control his dog - dog can't control himself - the innocent suffer.

The owner should face a hefty fine for not keeping his dog secure in his home. But I guess he will pay by having his dog put down. No one should feel unsafe to walk the streets whether it's while walking their dog or generally walking in their neighbourhood. There are no winners in this situation. Something must be done to remove where possible these dangerous dogs.

I hope he's put down.

The difference between a chihuahua attack and a staffy attack (to the previous poster) is that a chihuahua won't be killing anyone or anyone's pet. They're obviously less dangerous than a heavyset, strong dog. Plus they attack much less often. I also agree with Mandy - there is a problem with irresponsible dog ownership in Canberra. Since I moved here a few years ago I've noticed the same problem - when out walking I often get approached by dogs off lead and my children have had unrestrained dogs jump all over them at playgrounds. I love dogs, have my own, but believe we need better enforcement of the regulations (or better regs). No dogs off leash outside of an 'offleash park'. And pick up after them. Its not hard. People always think their dogs are safe - but dogs can do things that are 'out of character' just as humans can. Take precautions to protect your dog from being accused and to protect others from being hurt.

Errrm, hello, an American Staffordshire - let us be clear, that is a nice way of describing a Pitbull - check out the pictures of both breeds - completely indistinguishable.

This is so sad. Sad for the beloved little pet Teddy that died and even sadder for Navia. As a pet sitter, I know a determined dog can 'escape' from it's yard, but every pet/dog owner - if they love their pet - should make an effort to keep their own and other dogs safe from harm. It's imperative to maintain the fences etc around their property.
