Drop bear brings a fair surprise

15 Nov, 2009 10:10 AM
FOR DIMINUTIVE skydiver Pina Prosperi, jumping from 10,000 feet in a teddy bear suit was nothing compared to the mob reception from gleeful kids.

The experienced skydiver, veteran of more than 500 jumps, touched down at the Yarralumla Primary School fete to be swarmed by children.

''Poor teddy was swamped,'' Ms Prosperi said, recuperating after her jump. ''Teddy couldn't move. Forget about the skydiving being dangerous, afterwards was worse.''

That's a big call, given the heart-in-mouth nature of the sport.

Ms Prosperi and her tandem partner Skydive Canberra chief instructor Terry Riddle freefell 5000 feet before the parachute canopy opened, travelling at speeds of about 200km/h.

But the Lyons woman is an expert at handling both jumps and children.

She's previously plunged dressed as Santa's little helper, the Easter Bunny and in Halloween costume.
