Egg farm pays peanuts for 40ha property

17 Sep, 2009 11:25 AM
Canberra’s cage egg facility, Pace Farm, pays the ACT Government only $486 a year for its lease of a 40ha

property in Belconnen, less than many Canberrans pay in rent a week.

The revelation comes as the ACT Legislative Assembly last night passed a scrambled version of the Greens’ proposed changes to Canberra’s egg production and retail

legislation, rejecting an outright ban on battery hen farms but endorsing watered-down labelling requirements for retailers.

Greens MLA Caroline Le Couteur, whose Bill had originally provided for a ban on cage egg production, accused the Government and Opposition of bowing to pressure from

Canberra’s only cage egg facility, Pace Farm, where about 210,000 eggs are laid each year.

Ms Le Couteur unearthed the facility’s 20-year lease showing what it paid in rent. It expires in 2013.

Both parties rejected the ban on the grounds Pace Farm would simply move its operation to NSW, taking

with it Canberra jobs without providing any net benefits to its hens, a threat Chief Minister Jon Stanhope

insisted should be taken seriously.

This is disgraceful, what idiots were in government then to allow such a ridiculous lease payment per year for a 20 year lease. Canberran taxpayers are being ripped off by a company who treats chickens in such a cruel manner. I'd like to know what self interest Labor and the Liberals have to allow these cruel practices to continue.

210,000 eggs annually is 48 dozen per day. Pace Farm uses battery hens to supply every Canberran with not much more than one half an egg per year. Th3 Gov't gete $1.30 per day.

Am I reading this correct, is that 210,000 eggs a year or a typo and should read 2 million. If it is correct I could collect and package this on my own, what staff would lose jobs this is obviously an owner operated business. Regardless this is an insult to other struggling businesses and they should be demanding a peppercorn rent.

How ridiculous is that? Cage farms already have the price jump on free range because they cram so many birds into small spaces, here they do it at almost no charge. People should get a few backyard chickens - free FRESH eggs, free compost, bug control and happy chooks.

I have been buying free range for many years, most of the time from local farmers at weekly markets. Even if I ran out of supply at home, I would NEVER buy battery-hen eggs on principle of how the company profits from their cruelty to these animals. Hit them where it hurts most and boycott those brands. Sure, it's a bit extra paying for even free range from a major retailer but the quality in itself if a huge difference too. Just make sure you read the package well, they can get sneaky with their advertising these days.

Just another example of polititians selling out (or being outsmarted by) business interests. A free kick for the cruelty industry!

When the lease is up the chickens will most likely go. I suppose there aren't any other leases like that in Canberra? Come on, on course there are! Where are they?

Just goes to show there's corruption at levels of the government no matter where you go

Whose got egg on their face now? This is no yoke. They need to shell out more money at least another dozen dollars per sq.m. Hope the pollies don't chicken out and comb through the agreement so they can pluck them for more money. Just wing it and see what happens.

C'mon Jon leave the jokes at home. This demands a hard hand and not your softie touch again, mate.
