Engine shuts down in latest Qantas incident

Engine shuts down in latest Qantas incident

14/08/2008 12:29:00 PM
A Qantas passenger plane was grounded in New Zealand after an engine shut down on approach to Auckland Airport overnight.

One engine on a Boeing 747-300, QF25 from Melbourne, shut down while approaching Auckland Airport last night, a Qantas spokeswoman in Auckland said today.

The crew managed to restore power and the plane landed safely.

"A faulty fuel-flow regulator was replaced overnight and the flight (to Los Angeles) is now scheduled to depart at 1.40pm (1140 AEST) today," the spokeswoman told NZPA.

The incident came on a day of continuing turmoil for Qantas, in which a 767 was grounded in Melbourne because of a problem with the flap indicator in the cockpit.

In another incident yesterday a second Boeing 747 had to be taken out of service for a time to replace a jack screw driving the plane's horizontal tail.

Urgent maintenance was needed because the plane's tail was at risk of breaking away.

The airline confirmed that QF31, due to depart Sydney for London via Singapore, had been delayed because of "maintenance requirements associated with a horizontal stabiliser jack screw".

On Tuesday afternoon, the airline grounded six planes - a quarter of its 737-400 fleet - after finding discrepancies in their maintenance records.

Wow....another couple of "minor mechanical faults??" It's getting a bit beyond a joke, if they are minor mechanical faults as stated - Why are there so many? Incompetent mechanics and aviation staff??? Sounds to me like someone is sabotaging these planes but we'll never know till innocent passengers die and they further their investigations as to why this is occuring so frequently!

These qantas plane problems have gone way beyond "minor" maintenance requirements.Has their maintenance been contracted out to Asia to save money? How about saving lives ! I have always flown AirNZ or Qantas but whilst their contracts continue to be done in Asia or other 'money saving' countries none of my family will be flying with them again, nor will our business associates. Bring the maintenance 'home' to staff who care about passengers or take the consequences. When everyone starts booking with other airlines perhaps they'll get the message and "get their act together. Bring on Mr Branson !!

Qantas is becoming a laughing stock. And why? Paul Keating. Until Keating sold of Qantas it was the safest and most profitable airline in the world. Own by Australians for Australians. An Airline every Aussie was proud to fly in. Now it's over priced and not as safe as it used to be. It's all for the good of the benefit of the shareholders. Goodonya Paul. Not even in politics anymore and you're still stuffing up the country. Mmmm didn't you sell the Commonwealth Bank and the Airports too?? Three of the worst sales in Australia's history. And people whinge about the Telstra sell off.

I worked for Qantas some 30 years ago when it was the safest airline in the world and there was not one safety related incident. Now some 30 years later that airline has one of the worst safety records in the world and this was achieved by its INCOMPETENT CEO, Jeoff Dickson who not only mismanaged that airline but mad it unsafe to fly with because of his cost saving measures which had disasterous effects on safety. He should have his superannuation reduced considerably so that other would be CEO's think twice about bringing their companies in disrepute. I would NOT fly with Qantas even if they woud give me free First Class trips around the world! because IT WILL ONLY BE A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE QANTAS WILL HAVE A MAJOR DISASTER SO DON'T FLY WITH THEM!!

qantas have taken liberties with the trust and loyalty of the australian public for too long. From ripping off travel agencies to operating 30 year old 747's and an attitude to service that can only be described as arrogant, they truly are heading down the gurglar. HERES HOPING, GOOD RIDDANCE QANTAS!!
