Everything's roses ... with a little help

Waving cream dendrobium orchids, blood-red roses or delicate pinkbrasilias around in the air - whatever she happened to have in her hand - florist Mercedes Sarmini repeated that cut flowers were like women.

The owner of Flowers by Mercedes gave a floral demonstration at the Interflora Exhibition Marquee at Floriade, letting the audience in on tips.

Warm water will go quicker to a flower's head than cold.

To prolong the vase-life of imported red roses that have been ''gassed'' in quarantine, scald them in freshly boiled water for 10 seconds, then place them in warm water overnight.
