Exodus of skills fear in Cotter work delay

13 Jul, 2009 08:01 AM
The ACT Chamber of Commerce has warned of a mass exodus of the territory's tradespeople should the Cotter Dam upgrade be delayed.

Actew Corporation last week lodged a development application for the $200million expansion with the ACT Planning and Land Authority.

Chamber of Commerce chief executive Chris Peters said the application should be approved as soon as possible to keep tradespeople working in the territory.

''The problem we've got is a number of our major constructions, particularly our civil works, are coming to a conclusion,'' he said.

''The risk for us is we will lose our tradespeople, particularly on the civil engineering side, who are very mobile. They'll move wherever the work is.''

Actew Corporation managing director Mark Sullivan has previously said the territory's planning and approvals process had caused delays.

If we can't fill Corin and Bendora dams with our current rainfall, how are we going to fill a Cotter dam 10 times its current size?

Ah Mark, that truly is funny. Where do you think the vast majority of the water in the Murray Darling Basin is being used? Have you heard of irrigation? Telling Canberra to stop growing to save water is akin to saving electricity by unplugging your TV, whist running an outdoor electric heater 24 hours a day.

The extra water that the Cotter Dam extension will take out of the Murray-Darling Basin will put the survival of our most important catchment in even greater jeopardy. Don't build it! Canberra should stop growing, pull its belt in and live sustainably.
