Family’s bride No 4 walks down the aisle at old St John’s

RACHEL HIGHMORE and Glen Yaldren managed to avoid one of the pitfalls of wedding planning. Their venue was preordained before either was born. According to Rachel, she became the fourth generation of her family yesterday to be married at the Anglican Church of St John the Baptist in Reid. The new bride’s greatgrandmother was married at the church about 70 years ago.

The tradition has been passed down through the generations. Rachel’s maternal grandparents tied the knot at the church half a century ago and were at the venue yesterday to see history repeat itself. Rachel, who handled the lion’s share of the planning herself, said having the church had been a blessing. ‘‘

My husband-to-be is not really of any religion, but he was quite happy to get married there as well. We both love the church, and there’s a bit of family history with mine,’’ the 22-year-old said on the eve of her wedding. Several relatives are also buried in St John’s graveyard. The church itself was consecrated in 1845. ‘‘[The family] know the history of the church and a lot about it,’’ Rachel said.
