A man who was found not guilty of murdering his father because of mental impairment will be detained indefinitely.
Reinhold Steurer, who had chronic schizophrenia, stabbed Michael Steurer to death in the dining room of their Duffy home on April 26, 2007.
In May this year, ACT Supreme Court Justice Hilary Penfold found Steurer fit to plead to the charge, as medical advice indicated he could take part in a trial.
He was found not guilty of murder because of mental impairment due to his psychological state at the time of the stabbing.
Justice Penfold indicated this week she would order Steurer be detained in custody until a time deemed suitable by the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal, which reviews detention orders on a six-monthly basis.
Justice Penfold ordered a mental health assessment, treatment plan and risk assessment be conducted on the man.
She indicated that Steurer should remain at Brian Hennessy House in Calvary Hospital at least until a formal detention order was made.
In 2007, Steurer told his committal hearing that he asked his father, ''Have you ever been stabbed?'' before plunging a kitchen knife into the older man's chest.
When asked why he had done it, Steurer told police, ''I didn't like him enough. That's all I'll say.''
