 Fears on 'extreme' school seminars

Fears on 'extreme' school seminars

30 Oct, 2009 07:05 AM
The ACT Government has ordered a full investigation into allegations a far-right Christian group held seminars in several Canberra public schools denigrating homosexuality.

Education Minister Andrew Barr said preliminary advice from his department indicated the ''extreme views of a fringe organisation'', Focus on the Family, had been presented in six ACT schools in the past two years.

A student at Canberra High School who attended one of the seminars alleged it included claims sex was bad, painted homosexuality in a similar light to bestiality and warned students they could become gay by watching gay pornography.

Students were also allegedly warned they could become attracted to animals by watching animal pornography, that if a couple had sex it was the boy's fault and that girls should not provoke boys by putting their hair up and wearing make-up.

The alleged comments were made during a series of ''No Apologies Impact'' seminars held at the school and attended by students from years 7 to 10.

Mr Barr ordered his department conduct an investigation, which is expected to take weeks to complete.

The student's parent, David Gould, said he was very concerned that Focus on the Family was teaching students to discriminate against homosexuals.

''It's just wrong, it confuses young people already going through the confusing period that is adolescence and it's spreading hatred.".

Slow news week story. A Bill of Rights would allow this as it would enshrine free speech and freedom of thought. As I understand it, attendance was voluntary, no-one made them go. Religious types are entitled to their opinion, and that is regardless of religion.

When are these Christian Groups going to stop trying to spread their hatred and start accepting poeple for who they are? Targeting teenagers, already a confusing time, with their hatred and arcahic beliefs is just wrong and to tell the truth; I'm surprised that schools would allow these things to go inside them without telling parents. I know I would like the school my kids go to to inform me of anything like this that may expose my kids to this type of perverse viewpoint. I would never look at joining religion, I don't think I could hate that much.

And in a public school!...thank god for secularism, and its ability to remove this kind of thing in most cases! Otherwise this type of mumbo jumbo would be ubiquitous like it was in times past when the Vatican effectively ruled the western world. Maybe looking at equality for women within the church rather than imposing contradictory and oppressive dogma on others would be a more positive step.

Why are we so worried about providing our children with both sides of this debate? There is a difference between education and providing only one side of the story. Well done to the ACT Government for providing our children with a well rounded education. A lot of Canberrans agree that abstinence is the safest "safe sex" message that we can provide our children with.

to PLOSE... "I would never look at joining religion, I don't think I could hate that much." By your comments, I think you already have.

Kurt, equating Homosexuality with beastiality is NOT providing the "other side of the arguement" but rather spreading hatred and discrimination. If this group said that they don't believe in homosexuality then your arguement would be valid. Hatred and discrimination are never, and should never be, considered and alternative view point.

I don't think that anyone has a problem with providing alternative points of view on any subject, in fact that should be encouraged for healthy debate and allowing people to explore all their options. But likening sex with someone of the same sex to bestiality is hardly part of any 'rounded education'. It only increases stigma and confusion for young people who do identify as being same sex attracted (or who are dealing with issues around their sexuality) and feeds the flames of homophobia already so deeply entrenched in our schools. I think regardless of its voluntary attendance nature, there should still be scrutiny about the content and the way that it was also presented to students to entice them to attend.

I wonder if an Islamic “extremist” group was allowed to preach to our children with their radical views of hatred toward our way of living, you would feel the same Kurt? Sometimes ‘one side of the story’ might best be explained at home where parents can have more control of the content. There is a difference between education and preaching propaganda.

It would be hypocritical of ACT Government to wring its hands. They were only too happy to embrace the dodgy 'school chaplaincy' program.

Just what are these religious scavengers doing in our secular public schools? I object strenuously to public asset being turned over to them.
