Fears test will make Earth go out with a Big Bang

Fears test will make Earth go out with a Big Bang

10 Sep, 2008 08:21 AM
A physics experiment that could change the way we view ourselves begins today in Geneva with some opponents believing it could bring the world to an end.

When the $6billion Large Hadron Collider starts up, it will smash particles together in an attempt to recreate the conditions of the early universe, fractions of a second after the Big Bang.

The experiment's opponents, who have taken its architects to court in the United States and France, believe it will create black holes in which the Earth could disappear.

Melbourne University physicist Geoff Taylor has led the Australian contingent which designed detectors and shielding as well as software that triggers the collection of information. The collider is housed in a 27km-long tunnel 50 to 175m below the ground that runs under Geneva airport and surrounding villages and farmland in Switzerland.

As the particles smash together they will break apart into smaller, more fundamental components, giving physicists a fleeting chance to observe those particles, some of which have never been seen before.

Professor Taylor says the experiment's opponents are completely misguided in their stance.

''One of the things we are trying to do is create mini-black holes which scientifically would be a magnificent thing and tell us we don't live in three dimensions, but that we live in nine or 10 dimensions,'' Professor Taylor said.

''As soon as you say there is the possibility of creating black holes, you have people saying we are going to be swallowed up by black holes.

''That's where the furore has come and it's completely misguided.''

Professor Taylor said if today's experiment showed there were more than the three dimensions height, width and depth it could change the way we looked at life. One of the most anticipated products might be the elusive Higgs boson, or the God Particle, which could explain how other elementary particles acquired properties such as mass.

If scientists verify the existence of the Higgs boson, it would be a big step in the search for a Grand Unified Theory, which aims to bring together three of the four known fundamental forces: electromagnetism, the strong nuclear force and the weak nuclear force, leaving out only gravity.

''One of the key reasons for building the machine is to find out if [the God Particle] exists,'' Professor Taylor said.

''The existence of such a particle would give us a whole new view on the structure of the universe.''

Australian Institute of Physics president Cathy Foley said particles would be smashed together at speeds that generated large amounts of energy.

''Each collision of a pair of protons in the LHC will release an amount of energy comparable to that of two colliding mosquitoes.'' she said.

''It's like a rice-bubble pop.''

Humm Is This Right? Could We Really Die Tomorrow?

the pin-head sized peace of metal flyin at the speed of light equals to nuclear explosion. i think that "mosquito" thing is quite interesting. however if this experiment could change people's lifes to better, im raisin both my hands up! well done!

Well, at least the post apocalyptic t-shirts are ready: http://fiendfolio.blogspot.com/20 08/09/are-you-ready-for-imp ending-apocalypse.html

i think this is taking things too far and its messing with nature just that one step too much. i'm all for finding new things out,but this has me really freaked out. if things go wrong,i would not even have time to get back to my children or my partner all of who i love dearly and tha would break my heart even more. why does this have to be done, cant we just leave this as something we are not meant to find out. i wish the court case to have the injunction against this being done had been granted.

who cares about the past be focusd on the future, if you scientist go through with this we may not have a future. im 15 and i have the rest of my life to livee and you might be about to ruin that.

I think its terrible. you dont mess with the plannet. Peoples lives are at stake because of science? i thought science is to make the world and people better? not to risk wiping out mankind!!! My children wont sleep because my 12 year old daughter heard about the button being pressed tommorrow and sobbing uncontrolably that she is scared that shes going to die. how is that right to inflict worry on another human being let alone a 12 year old child? We were created by a force far beyond our dreams. the future is important, and how to make the world a better healthier and safe place for mankind. not to try and create the past. to get information. but at the same time play with our lives. scientists are not god and should not be allowed to play the roll. human rights and all that rubbish when we dont even have the right to say!!!! its outragious. scientists dedicate their lives to science. i on the other hand dedicate my life to my children and fellow earthlings. what is the point in living life or the billions of years of generations if some nutty proffesor can have the opportunity to take it all away. on a 50/50 chance of scientific answers or death,

If you somehow managed to create a black hole wouldn't that black hole eventually suck things into it (including light) and eventually grow. Scientists also think that it would take the black hole 5 years to grow to the anticipated size to "consume" the earth. Even then the year that the black hole is at the estimated size the planets would line up and switch the poles. Nostradamus would be right again when he and the mayans said that the world would in in 2012 (08,09,10,11,12= 5 years) My thought is: is it really worth destroying the earth to find out one insignificant thing.

It won't be long before those ego driven idiots will destroy our planet. What are they trying to achieve?

What this guys are doing at geneva is the same think has group of kids playng with fire in gas station. I do not now much about black holes but i now they absorb particles and if this is true this guys are going to create a chain reaction. When the creation of the black hole is complete it is going to create a magnetic field ,the magnetig field it wil grow if particles are going to be absorbed and when it grows more and more particles are going to be absorbed.Particles can be found inside the accelarator picose their is no such thing has a perfect vacum. This things are the worst that can hapend, but on the other hand it could just be a sience break trough. The apocalipse was programed in 2000 but it has been reschualed to 2008.

I think we shouldnt do the experiment because if things dont go right and nothing lines up the way its suppost to people are taking a huge risk of ending the human race... and why are you going to risk every ones lives just to find out weither the theory it really or not.
