Firefighters near Captains Flat have subdued a fuel-reduction burn that jumped containment lines during 107km/h winds on Sunday, leaving four firemen overcome by smoke.
Up to 20 firefighters from Forests NSW and the Rural Fire Services fought to control the fire, which was finally contained last night.
Forests NSW began the four-day burn over 200ha in the Tallaganda State Forest last Thursday but ''extreme conditions'' and unexpected high winds caused spot fires to flare up across containment lines.
The organisation's Monaro area planning manager, Tony Scherl, said the fire burnt about 20ha of private land next to the state forest.
He said the injured firefighters were believed to have been overcome by smoke while trying to move a vehicle. They were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.
Three had been discharged from hospital after observation.
