They are normally out there selling hard, but last night Canberra's real estate professionals put away their gavels for the industry's night of nights.
The Canberra Times Real Estate Institute of the ACT Awards for Excellence are now in their 14th year. They were held at the Hellenic Club.
The clear achiever of the night was the Independent Property Group, taking home eight awards, including corporate agency of the year and large agency of the year.
Independent also won the education and training, innovation, communication, community service, and residential salesperson of the year awards, and the president's award.
It is the 13th time the agency has won the award for large agency of the year.
Sales and marketing director John Minns said he was elated.
''But from our perspective, the most important thing to us is recognition of a wonderful team that we've got working for us, obviously the people who go out there and provide the service that qualifies you to win awards,'' he said.
Mr Minns said he was proud of his team.
''Any business that's successful would say their people are very passionate, but I'd have to say every single one of our people is pleased to be there, work well together and support each other, and they care about our clients and that's usually the mix that gets you across the line not only in awards but also helps grow a business, something we're keen to do in the ACT.''
LJ Hooker Tuggeranong was named medium agency of the year, considered the most hotly contested award as it encompasses the majority of the Canberra agencies.
It is the seventh time the agency has won the award. The ACT institute's president, Michael Wellsmore, said he considered the agency to be among the top agencies of the LJ Hooker franchise in Australia.
He said directors Frank Pompeani and Mario Sanfrancesco had worked hard to develop ''a strong team and a strong presence in the market''.
Colin McIntyre Property took home small agency of the year.
Auctioneer of the year went to Richard Keeley, of Richard Luton Properties.
Mr Wellsmore said Mr Keeley brought flair to the auction process.
''Richard's father was a real estate agent so it's obviously in his blood,'' he said. ''He's very good at engaging with the people who are at auction, so people enjoy the auction process, but he's also very experienced and precise and does everything technically correct.''
Mr Wellsmore said the awards set a standard.
The Canberra Times print advertising award was given in two categories; Berkeley Residential was the boutique agency of the year, while Peter Blackshaw Real Estate was the large agency of the year.
