Full-time jobs up, part-time down

The unemployment rate was effectively steady at a seasonally adjusted 5.3 per cent in February because an increase in full-time employment all but cancelled out a fall in part-time positions.

Australian Bureau of Statistics figures issued today revised down January's unemployment rate from 5.3 to 5.2 per cent, meaning the new result is actually a small increase for this month.

The figures showed the ACT unemployment rate also increased by 0.1 point, to 3.9 per cent in trend terms, with another 100 people - for a total of 8000 in the territory - looking for work.

Nationally, there was a net 400 increase in the number of jobs in February.

''Full-time employment increased 11,400 to 7,659,700 and part-time employment decreased 11,000 to 3,311,400,'' the bureau said.

''Unemployment increased 10,700 (1.8 per cent) to 615,900. The number of persons looking for full-time work increased 9200 to 447,100 and the number of persons looking for part-time work increased 1500 to 168,800.''

The shift to full time work was also evident in the bureau's aggregate monthly hours worked figures, which increased 35.9 million hours, or by 2.4 per cent, to 1553.2 million hours for the month. The labour force underutilisation rate also decreased, by 0.6 points to 12.8 per cent.

The labour force participation rate fell 0.1 point to 65.2 per cent.

The youth unemployment rate increased by 0.6 points to 16.3 per cent.
