FROM clothing and canned foods to specially bought gifts, the students from Hawker College have dug deep for those less fortunate in the lead up to Christmas.
Last week the school handed over a large collection of goods to the Country Women's Association's newly-formed Belconnen branch.
The assortment of items will now be distributed to families in drought affected areas in the Monaro region.
CWA Belconnen Branch secretary June McCluskey said the group would now parcel up the items and deliver them to predominantly one-teacher schools.
''We're very happy and proud to be receiving Hawker College's Christmas Giving Tree,'' she said.
''We need to look after our farming families because they produce the food we eat.''
This is the second year Hawker College has donated their Christmas Giving Tree to the CWA, a fundraising activity largely organised by the school's leadership group.
Principal Steve Gwilliam said he was extremely proud of the young men and women who had organised and motivated their peers to get involved with the cause.
''It's so encouraging to see young people with a heart for our community,'' he said.
''It's something we hope to continue.''
Mr Gwilliam said the 770 Year 11 and 12 students had donated their goods quietly and in a low key manner.
''They don't want praise,'' he said.
Student Leadership Group member and Year 12 student Jeremy Gallant said all the students had agreed it was a good thing to do.
''It's pretty good to see the school as a community come together for this cause,'' he said.
Mrs McCluskey said it was a very mature, giving, thoughtful and practical thing to do.
